Activation Lock
Activation Lock ties an Apple device to its owner's account to restrict reuse. Removing it does not recover the device's existing files.

Definition
Activation Lock is an Apple device protection associated with Find My. It links a supported device to an Apple Account and restricts activation by someone else. It is distinct from the screen passcode that protects data already on the device.
Why It Matters
A family may inherit an iPhone and still need Apple's official process before reusing it. Apple's deceased-account guidance explains that reuse requires erasing and restoring the device. Removing Activation Lock should therefore not be confused with obtaining a photo archive or unlocking encrypted contents.
Common Mistakes
- Do not reset a locked phone to look for files or assume an Apple Legacy Contact key is the screen passcode. Avoid businesses promising guaranteed access without explaining whether they erase the device.
Safe Best Practices
- Separate preservation, account-data requests and hardware reuse. Resolve authority and data needs, verify received copies, and obtain the responsible person's decision before an erase. Follow Apple's official process for the country concerned.
