Emergency Access

Updated:

Emergency access is a feature offered by some services that lets an account holder arrange access for a trusted person in advance. The person may later request access under that service's rules. It is not a universal right for relatives or a feature included with every family plan.

Why it matters

For example, Bitwarden distinguishes viewing a vault from taking over the account. Its process can include a waiting period during which the account holder can approve or reject the request. Other providers may use different arrangements or offer no equivalent feature.

Common mistakes

  • Do not confuse emergency access with a legacy contact, an emergency kit or legal authority to handle an estate. Access to stored credentials does not grant unrestricted permission to use the accounts they belong to.

Safer next steps

  • While you can manage your own account, check eligibility, complete invitations and confirmations, and review exactly what the helper may see or change. Agree when they should act and how to coordinate with the appropriate representative. Check the saved settings and instructions without triggering a takeover as a test; review them when contacts or accounts change.
