Password Manager

Updated:

A password manager is an application that stores login details in a protected digital vault. Many also create unique passwords and fill them in when you sign in. Opening the vault may require a master password, a passkey or another supported method.

Why it matters

A parent may use one to organize dozens of accounts. Their family still needs to know which manager they use and which sharing, recovery or emergency-access arrangements were completed. A family subscription does not automatically reveal everyone's private vault.

Common mistakes

  • Do not assume the provider can recover a lost master password or that opening a vault gives permission to use every account inside it. An exported password file may be unencrypted even when the vault is protected.

Safer next steps

  • For your own planning, check the provider's recovery options and protect the vault with its supported security settings. Record the service and the location of secure instructions in your account inventory, not the passwords or recovery secrets. Review the arrangement with your chosen helper without exposing the whole vault.
